What official sources in the Netherlands say
The Dutch government’s travel advice for Turkey says there are known cases of people who died after a procedure, and advises checking the facility and asking a Dutch doctor first.
“Reist u naar Turkije voor een cosmetische of een medische ingreep? Er zijn gevallen bekend van personen die na een ingreep zijn overleden. Controleer of de gekozen (medische) instelling goed bekend staat. En vraag vooraf advies bij een Nederlandse arts.” Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken (NederlandWereldwijd), 1 October 2026
Basic Dutch health insurance does not always cover extra costs abroad in full; the advice is to have travel insurance that does.
“Sluit altijd een goede reisverzekering af die extra kosten dekt. Bijvoorbeeld van ziekenhuisopname, of als u naar Nederland moet worden vervoerd (repatriëring). The Dutch health minister has said agencies that only arrange travel for procedures abroad fall outside the health inspectorate’s oversight.
“Reisbemiddeling en het aanbieden van websites waarop te zien is welke operaties in het buitenland mogelijk zijn, zijn geen zorg in de zin van de Wkkgz en vallen daarom ook niet onder toezicht van de IGJ.” Tweede Kamer, Aanhangsel van de Handelingen 2021-2022 nr. 3336 (antwoord Minister Kuipers, VWS), 30 June 2022
Official figures
There is no national register of complications after procedures abroad in the Netherlands; the plastic surgeons’ association started one in May 2022.
“Er is geen centrale (nationale) registratie van complicaties na ingrepen in het buitenland omdat complicatieregistraties in de ziekenhuizen geen onderscheid maken tussen nationale of buitenlandse complicaties. De NVPC is per 11 mei 2022 een nieuwe (openbare) registratie gestart. Gezien de recente start zijn daar nog geen concrete bevindingen uit te halen.
